Trails this way
Harini Krishnamurthy
A few years ago, during the pandemic and around the time we got our dog, I started to frequent trails close to where I lived. I downloaded an app on my phone to navigate the trails and discover new ones. What began as exercise for me and my dog slowly turned into an almost compulsive need to be on the trail and connect with nature. It was simultaneously an escape from the routine and a meditative experience where I could take a pause and just be.
The creation of trails and the amenities within our green spaces takes significant human intervention. While we often lament humanity's negative impact on the environment, the act of preserving these spaces for more people to enjoy respectfully, is, to me, a positive step.
This series of images is a celebration of our local trails and natural spaces and the work that goes into taking care of them. The images are lumen prints created by placing a “negative” of a digital image on expired silver gelatin paper and exposing it to UV light (to mimic the outdoors). Trail maps and other icons are layered on to the prints by hand, using ink and linocut stamps.
